What maintenance actually prevents

The majority of emergency calls we run trace back to things a tune-up catches early: weak capacitors that measurably degrade before they strand a compressor in a heat wave, cracked igniters that show hairlines before the no-heat morning, condensate drains crusting shut in spring, refrigerant charges drifting low a season before the coil freezes. None of these announce themselves to homeowners — all of them announce themselves to a technician with a meter.

There's also the quiet cost: a system drifting out of tune runs less efficiently every month. You pay that penalty invisibly on every bill, which is often more over a year than the tune-up costs.

The math, plainly

A furnace tune-up and an AC tune-up booked separately cost more than a plan year covering both — plans bundle the two visits at a lower combined rate, add priority scheduling during rushes (when everyone's system fails at once, plan members jump the queue), and typically include a repair discount. If you'd book both visits anyway, the plan is simply the same habit for less money. That's the whole trick.

A maintenance plan is a subscription to remembering. The tune-ups were always worth it; the plan just makes sure they happen.

Who shouldn't buy one

1. Disciplined self-bookers. If you genuinely call every spring and every fall — calendar reminders, the whole routine — you can pay per visit and lose only the priority scheduling and repair discount. No shame in it.

2. Owners of end-of-life equipment. If your 20-year-old furnace is one repair away from replacement anyway, put the plan money toward the new system instead. (We'd rather tell you that now than sell you a plan first.) New equipment is the opposite case: most manufacturer warranties require documented annual maintenance to stay valid, so skipping it can quietly void ten years of parts coverage.
